Car taillights should be eyebrows.

Driving in Los Angeles is bonkers. We’ve got some of the most aggressive drivers you’ll ever see, and I’ve become one of them. When I head back East, I just push people around on the road like they’re suckers.

But here’s the thing: with all these self-driving cars and automated systems making driving “easier,” it’s crazy that there’s no way to communicate what kind of driving is happening around you. Are you dealing with someone driving like an asshole? Someone overly cautious? Aggressive? Defensive? You have to figure it out by watching their behavior, which isn’t exactly foolproof, especially when a new car pops into your lane.

So, here’s my idea: we already have taillights that kinda look like eyebrows. Eyebrows are a huge part of how humans communicate emotion. Why not use that concept for cars? Imagine taillights with expressive eyebrows.

Driving like a maniac? Angry eyebrows. Driving normally? Flat, neutral eyebrows. Taking it easy? The insides of the eyebrows lift. But here’s the kicker: if the car’s being driven by a robot, the eyebrows change color, blue, signaling that a machine’s in control.

This system could help drivers understand what’s going on around them and make better decisions on the road. More importantly, cars will now have eyebrows.
